Muharram is the first month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. It is called "Muharram" because fighting was considered forbidden during this sacred month. In only a few days, the month of Muharram will arrive, and black banners will cover the land of Karbala in remembrance of and protest against the tragedy of Karbala.

Among the most significant events of the holy month of Muharram are: the arrival of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions in Karbala in 61 AH; the death of the Prophet Adam (peace be upon him); the death of the Prophet Yahya (John the Baptist) (peace be upon him); the Day of Ashura, which marks the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) and his companions in 61 AH; the martyrdom of Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas ibn Ali (peace be upon him); the bombing of the Shrine of Imam رضا (peace be upon him) in 1415 AH; and the bombing of the Al-Askari Shrine in Samarra in 1427 AH.

Following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) in 61 AH, this month became a period of mourning and sorrow. The infallible Imams (peace be upon them) used to commemorate this tragedy during Muharram. It is narrated from Imam رضا (peace be upon him “Whenever the month of Muharram began, my father was never seen smiling, and sadness would overcome him until ten days had passed. When the tenth day arrived, it became a day of grief, sorrow, and weeping for him, and he would say: ‘This is the day on which Hussein (peace be upon him) was killed.’”
