A Reflection on the Martyrdom Anniversary of "Bāb al-Murād" Imam al-Jawād (Peace Be Upon Him)







In these days, tord the end of the month of Dhū al-Qa‘da, the lovers and followers of the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt (Peace be Upon them) remember a sorrowful occasion and a great tragedy — the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Muhammad al-Jawād (Peace be Upon him), which occurred in the year 220 AH.

Imam Muhammad ibn ‘Alī al-Jawād (Peace be Upon Him) is the ninth of the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt who were entsted by the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and blessings be Upon him and his family), by the command of Allah Almighty, to assume the role of leadership and guidance after him. The Qur’an affirms their infallibility, and the noble Sunnah attests to this in repeated traditions.

Narrations indicate that Caliph al-Mu‘taṣim al-‘Abbāsī made several attempts to assassinate Imam al-Jawād (Peace be Upon him). In his final wicked attempt to harm this "Ninth Moon" of the Imams of Guidance (Peace be Upon them), he chose Umm al-Faḍl to carry out his crime.

Ja‘far ibn al-Ma’mūn sought contact with his sister, Umm al-Faḍl, who s the wife of Imam al-Jawād (Peace be Upon him). Umm al-Faḍl s known for her immoral behavior, and Ja‘far s are of her jealousy of the Imam’s other wife, the mother of Imam al-Hādī. He began to poison her thoughts and shared the plan to eliminate Abū Ja‘far. She agreed to the plot, and, following al-Mu‘taṣim's instctions, Ja‘far gave her a lethal poison. She placed it in food—some say in the sweet grapes (razaqi grapes) that the Imam loved. After consuming it, the Imam began to suffer severe pain and vomited pure blood. He collapsed onto his bed, writhing in agony, turning from side to side, until his liver s torn apart piece by piece.

His martyrdom (Peace be Upon Him) s a painful tragedy and an indescribable sorrow for the Islamic Ummah. With his passing, a significant chapter of the Islamic message s closed. This occurred in the year 220 AH in Baghdad, during the early le of the cursed al-Mu‘taṣim al-‘Abbāsī.

After his martyrdom, his pure body (Peace be Upon Him) s prepared for burial with shing and shrouding rites. His Shī‘a and lovers carried him in a massive funeral procession to the Quraysh Cemetery. It s a day unlike any seen before in Baghdad, as tens of thousands gathered in mournful processions, praising the Imam, weeping over his loss, and recalling the immense calamity that befell the Muslims with the death of Imam al-Jawād (Peace be Upon him).

A grave s dug for his noble body next to the resting place of his grandfather, the great Imam Mūsā ibn Ja‘far (Peace be Upon them both), in the northern part of Baghdad, in an area formerly called the Quraysh Cemetery, now known as the city of al-Kāẓimiyyah.

Thus ended a luminous chapter, and another shining star of Ahl al-Bayt (Peace and blessings be Upon them all) faded ay. Peace be Upon him the day he s born—pure and immaculate—the day he s martyred—patient and steadfast—and the day he shall be resurrected—alive, a witness and a martyr over the Ummah.
